Now that the new German high speed line is fully open between Bamberg and Halle, the fastest option for taking a train Vienna to Berlin is to travel on ICE trains via Nurnberg - either on the new direct train, or with a change of train.

However, we're drawing your attention to this route via Praha/Prague for two reasons:

(1) It can be cheaper than travelling via Nurnberg - see the 'Ticketing Information' below, though note that tickets are released up to three months earlier on the alternative route via Nurnberg

(2) The connecting time in Praha will be around 1hr 25 mins, so you'll have more time to make the transfer between trains than on the route via Nurnberg - making the connection into the train on to Berlin is virtually guaranteed.

If you will be making this journey with a rail pass then setting off from Wien at 07:10 in the morning will give you more than four hours to explore Praha/Prague between trains.
