This wonderfully useful service of direct trains from northern Italy to Bavaria in southern Germany also involves travelling on one of the most spectacular European railway routes.
But if the timings of the daytime journey don't suit there is usualy the option of taking the night train.
However, due to construction works in Austria, the direct night train service will be suspended from November 18th to July 27th.
When travelling between most cities by train there is only one logical option, though on other journeys there is a choice between different trains or alternative routes. If different options are available you can use the info to decide which is best for you.

Omio is an online ticket agency which offers tickets for rail journeys in France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Spain.
The three key advantages of using Omio are
The disadvantage of booking with Omio is that it often adds a booking fee to the final price; therefore when it does so without offering a price advantage, SMTJ doesn't tend to offer Omio as a booking option.
DB is the national railway operator in Germany, so its website can be used for booking journeys by German express trains; the ICE and IC trains and it doesn't charge booking fees.
It also sells tickets for journeys by direct trains on all international routes from Germany regardless of whether DB is operating the train service.
It also sells an extensive range of end-to-end journeys which involve making connections both within Germany and in neighboring countries, but journeys between Germany and Britain cannot be booked on DB.
A key feature of DB website worth keeping mind is that it offers 1st class ticket purchasers complimentary seat reservations on journeys both within and to/from Germany.
Seat reservations for daytime in both 1st and 2nd class can also be booked separately from tickets.
Trenitlalia is the national rail operator in Italy and in addition to its cheaper types of ticket; it also typically offers other discounts available to non-Italians, which include:
The Nightjet train is usually scheduled to depart from Verona at 22:52 and arrive in Munchen/Munich at 09:20.
The first of these daytime trains isn't due to arrive in Munich/Munchen until around 14:30.
Final Destination: Munchen Hbf
The destination of these trains can be shown by ticket agents as 'München Hbf Gleis 5-10'
This is because Gleis 5-10 are in a separate part of the station, which is a 2 - 3 min walk away from the main concourse.
These trains also calls at: Munchen-Ost
If the end point of your journey is in central Munchen/Munich, around Marienplatz - then the quickest option is to leave a train at Munchen Ost station and connect there into an S-Bahn (local train) to the city centre.
In Munchen/Munich the S-Bahn trains are similar to Metro trains as they cross the city centre in a tunnel.
Trains on Line S8 also connect Munchen Ost to the airport; look for the trains terminating at 'Flughafen/Munchen'.
The new generation Railjet trains are scheduled to be used on the departures which are typically scheduled to leave Verona shortly after 09:00 and 11:00.
Step on board for one of Europe's most epic journeys by express trains.
All of the videos were taken when travelling in the opposite direction
Between Verona and Brennero the railway route primarily travels through a massive valley, by the River Adige - and on this part of the journey, there are some great views to be had from either side of the train.
But it is the views to the south of Innsbruck, after departure from Brennero, which are the highlight of this journey - and they can be seen on the left.
On departure from Innsbruck the train will follow the River Inn through the valley as far as Kufstein; and the best of these views are back over to the right.

Online bookings usually open: up to 6 months ahead of the travel date - but this period of time is shorter when looking up journeys in August to October.
However, if you book more than 4 months ahead, you may only see more expensive tickets, than are typically offered on this route.
A choice of tickets
Three types of tickets are available:
Two types of discounted tickets, which will be cheaper the further ahead you book - Sparpreis Europa and Super Sparpreis Europa
One type of non-discounted ticket - Flexpreis Europa.
A key difference between these types of tickets is refunds:
The other key difference is that both types of Sparpreis tickets are only valid on the specific departures selected when booking, but both types of Flexpreis tickets live up to their name, as they can be used on any departure on your travel date.
Note that none of the tickets can be exchanged to a different departure.
There's no need for this to be available for Flexpreis Europa tickets, as they aren't train departure specific.
If you book a Sparpreis Europa ticket and want to travel by a different departure you can refund it and then use the travel voucher towards the cost of the new booking.
Super Sparpreis Europa tickets can't be exchanged or refunded.
The Sparpreis, Flexpreis and Flexpreis Plus tickets also include 'City tickets', which can be used on public transport between locations in Munchen Hbf and Munich city centre
Booking on the DB website
You can find these direct trains more easily by making a proactive selection of 'Direct Trains Only'.
Or to see all the combinations of trains and journey options, some of which may be cheaper, take off the 'fastest connections' default.
Trains departing at different times can be cheaper than others leaving on the same day, so if you can be flexible with your departure time use the 'best prices' tool - at the top right on the list of journey options.
Using rail passes
When travelling in on the Brenner route taken by these trains over the Italy / Austria border paying a 'supplement' is required [when using 'global' Eurail or InterRail passes]https://www.interrail.eu/en/plan-your-trip/reservations/trains-with-additional-supplements).
The fees for the supplement are €15 in 1st class and €10 in 2nd class.
However, the supplement is not a seat reservation.
You can purchase the supplements on the Eurail reservation service or the InterRail reservation service and the seat reservation will also be included - though you will be charged a €2 booking fee per reservation, per person.
In Verona Porta Nuova, it's best to book these supplements at the Reisezentrum travel desk - because won't be charged a booking fee, but will also have to pay seat reservation charges of €3.50 in both 1st class and 2nd class.
Booking at a Trenitalia ticket desk is a more expensive option, as in addition to the supplement costs you will also have to pay a €2 booking fee for using the ticket desk + the seat reservation will cost an additional €3.50 - as per the info on this page.
The supplements are not available from the Trenitalia ticket machines.
OR if you book the supplement on the OBB website, the instructions are here,, you will need to proactively also add the seat reservation when booking- and pay the additional cost of €3.50 in both 1st class and 2nd class.

OBB is the national rail operator and its booking service offers journeys by express trains within Austria, as well as international journeys which don't involve making a connection outside of Austria.
It pays off to book online, as the discounted 'Sparscheine' tickets are only ever made available on the website, and when making international journeys to and from Austria, these Sparscheine tickets tend to be cheaper.
OBB can offer particularly good value for money when travelling with children on international rail journeys, but something to watch out for when travelling between Austria and Germany on daytime trains, is that reservations are an optional extra; but if you book 1st class tickets with the Germany railways website DB, the reservations are complimentary.
OBB often takes a unique approach to its booking path, but a key thing to keep in mind is that the first price you will see for any journey is that of a Second Class seat.
The costs of upgrading to first class, a reservation, or a sleeping cabin etc, is then added to this price.
Trenitlalia is the national rail operator in Italy and in addition to its cheaper types of ticket; it also typically offers other discounts available to non-Italians, which include:

Final Destination: Munchen Hbf
This train does not call at Munchen Ost.
The train is usually scheduled to depart from Verona at 22:58 and arrive in Munchen Hbf at 09:20
It is much slower than taking the daytime trains from Verona to Munich/Munchen because it takes an entirely different route via Villach and Salzburg - where it is due to arrive at around 06:45.
So if you do opt to take this night train, not only will be the journey be longer, you will also miss out on experiencing one of Europe's most stunning railway journeys.
Though the first daytime train from Verona isn't usually scheduled to arrive in Munich/Munchen until around 14:30.
On departure from Verona the train heading to Munchen will be joined to another train heading to Wien, the two trains are separated at Villach station.

Using rail passes:
Rail pass users must reserve before boarding this train.
However, these rail pass reservations can NO longer be booked online the DB website.
If you want to reserve seats, berths in couchettes or beds in the sleeping cabins before you arrive in Italy, the best option is to pay a booking fee and use the Eurail or InterRail reservation services**.**
Making the rail pass reservation in advance online is particularly recommended if you will be traveling between June and September.
If you wait until arriving in Verona to reserve, your first choice of accommodation on the train may have sold out.
