Notes

The other, more popular and quicker combination of trains between London and Basel involves having to make the awkward transfer across Paris between the Gare Du Nord and Gare De Lyon stations.

However, this is the alternative routing, which only involves having to change trains and NOT having to make a transfer between stations.

But there are three obstacles in the path of avoiding that cross Paris transfer:

(1) You can’t book end2end tickets in a single booking online – you have to split the ticket bookings between agents (the ‘Ticket Information’ below explains how), OR use a specialist rail ticket agent.

(2) This routing is more expensive than travelling via Paris (though the difference in price can be around only €20).

(3) Most* of the connections at Bruxelles Midi/Zuid station between the Eurostar from London and the ICE on to Cologne/Koln are around 20 mins.

And these connections are NOT guaranteed.

Find out more in 'Ticket Information' below.

Depart from London before 11:30 daily and you will still arrive in Basel before the end of the day – even if you do miss the optimum connection at Bruxelles Midi./Zuid.

The connecting time in Koln Hbf station between the arrival of the ICE from Brussels/Bruxelles and the ICE on to Basel is always around 35 – 40 minutes.

Rail Pass Users:

This combination of trains - Eurostar + ICE + ICE, is a much cheaper option than travelling via Paris on the combination of Eurostar + Lyria trains – which you have to take when travelling via the French capital.

That's because rail pass users don't have to pay a rail pass reservation fee on the ICE trains, but the compulsory reservation fee charged to rail pass users on the Lyria trains is comparatively expensive.
