True Milano to Zurich

Milano to Zurich

This route between northern Italy and northern Switzerland is the most travelled railway journey between the two countries which is fortunate as it is a fabulous journey.

Although opening of the world’s longest railway tunnel, The Gotthard Base Tunnel, has taken these trains away from what had been the most spectacular part of this route, namely the journey through* the Gotthard Pass.

*If you head off from Milano at 08:10 you can still travel the even more incredible older route, that train will take you through Biasca and on to Erstfeld, where you can change trains to complete the journey to Zurich.

However, if you stick to the direct trains this remains one of Europe's most incredible express train journeys, with numerous highlights that can be seen from both sides of the train.

The first of these highlights comes around an hour into the journey as the train approaches Lugano and then sweeps into the town across the lake - with great views both sides of the train (when the weather is right).

Once the train has crossed the lake there are views over the town of Lugano on the right.

The views over the town to the right when heading north, are even more impressive once the train has departed from Lugano station.

Once the train has passed through Lugano it passes along the shore of Lake Lugano with majestic views over the water on the right when heading north and over to the left when heading south.

Shortly after the train has moved on beyond the lake, the best of the views switch to the left as the train makes the epic descent down to Bellinzona.

Though make the most of this part of this journey between Lugano and Belliznona while you can, as from 2020 these trains on the Milano to Zurich route will be diverted into the Ceneri Base Tunnel.

Once the train has departed from Bellinzona it heads through the valley towards the Gotthard Base Tunnel, but the views are still spectacular on this south side of the tunnel.

The train will spend around 15 mins travelling through the tunnel and the highlights continue soon after the train has emerged back into the daylight - look out on the left for the view over the Lauerzsee.

When heading north there are also views to the left over the Luzernsee (Lake Lucerne) which aren't available when heading south.

Then shortly after departure from Arth-Goldau comes another highlight of the journey - the stunning views over the Zugsee that can also be seen from the left.
These two views below are typical of the scenery between Arth-Goldau and Zug.

Then after departure from Zug comes the dramatic conclusion to the journey, as the train descends to the shore of Lake Zurich (Zurichsee) between Zug and Thalwil - and here the views switch back to the right.
