Unusually these trains call at Manchester Oxford Road station before they depart from Manchester Piccadilly
If Oxford Road has convenient access from the starting point of your journey, boarding the train there can be a a good option.
At Manchester Piccadilly the access to these trains is more convoluted, as they depart from the platform/track which is furthest from the entrance to the station.
f you don't have a reservation, you can also typically increase your opportunity of finding available seats by boarding at Oxford Road

If you booked Advance tickets ahead of your travel and don't have reservations, if possible avoid departing Manchester between

08:00 and 10:00, and then between 16:00 and 18:30 on Monday to Fridays
09:00 and 13:00 on Saturday
13:00 to 19:00 on Sunday
The trains on this route can be very busy

Also there's no hiding that the Express Sprinter trains used on for many departures this route aren't particularly suited for journeys of this duration, but the newer, though not particularly new Turbostar trains, will improve things; they have more table seats and a more spacious ambience in general.
Though travellers should be grateful that there is still a direct service, pre-pandemic the plan was to terminate these trains at Nottingham, with connections on to Norwich, but for the time being, the service has been reprieved.

Though in the hours when no direct trains are available, connections in Nottingham are required.

The scenic highlight of this journey is when the train travels along the stunning Hope Valley Railway between Stockport and Sheffield.

SMTJ has yet to travel this way, but this video gives an idea of the journey experience.

The train will reverse direction on departure from Sheffield and Ely.

Saving money:

If you want to travel at the cheapest possible price, look for the 'Advance tickets', though the four key things worth knowing about booking and using 'Advance' tickets in usual circumstances on this route are:
(1) The ticket(s) will be valid for the specific departure you select when making a booking.
(2) The ticket(s) cannot either be refunded, if you subsequently change your plans or miss the train due to any circumstances not attributable to the train operator.
(3) They can be exchanged to another departure on this route prior to the departure you have booked - but the price difference with the new ticket (the price will likely have risen since your original booking) will need to be paid.

On this route Advance Tickets are also available up until five minutes before departure, including when booking at station ticket desks,
However, there are two good reasons for booking further ahead:

You will likely save money; though ticket prices can very between departures on this route, a train leaving an hour later or earlier can more than 50% cheaper.
Seat reservations not assigned when booking Advance tickets on the the travel date; and these can be busy trains.

Anytime tickets:

On the EMR website you will initially be offered only one type of ticket, Advance or Anytime; the limited numbers of Advance tickets can sell out weeks ahead on popular departures.
If you are initially only offered an Advance ticket(s), but wouldn't mind paying more for an Anytime ticket, so that you're not then committed to a specific departure, or want to be able to claim a refund, you will have to proactively seek out the Anytime tickets.
Booking Anytime Tickets with EMR

Reservations:

You need to book ahead of the travel date for seat reservations to be assigned, they will be automatically be assigned when booking Advance tickets and you will be offered the opportunity to add a reservation when booking Anytime tickets.

Travelling on Saturday-Sunday

Tickets are usually available 12 weeks ahead of the travel date, but maintenance work on the route is periodically undertaken at weekends and if it is scheduled on your travel date, it can affect when tickets will be released for sale.

If you're looking up a journey less than 12 weeks ahead and Advance tickets aren't available, it can be a good indication that works will be impacting on your travel date.
It can be worth checking this on the National Rail website - enter EMR as the operator.
