Modena is the closest major city to Bologna, so there' s no need to plan a journey in advance, simply turn up at the station, buy a ticket and off you go.
Final Destination:
The RGV trains - Piacenza or Milano;
The REG trains - Parma
The fastest Regionale Veloce (RGV) trains take 10 mins less than other Regionale Veloce/Regionale trains, but tickets cost the same; there is typically one of these faster RGV departures every hour.
These trains will normally depart from the Ovest concourse in Bologna station.
1 - 2 x REG/RGV trains per hour
Book early and save: No
Tickets will cost the same price if purchased at the station immediately before departure.
The train service between Bologna and Modena is split between:
But our advice is to ignore the Frecce and InterCity trains for this journey and TAKE these Regionale Veloce/Regionale trains.
The Frecce and InterCity trains are only around 5 mins faster than the quickest Regionale Veloce trains.
Avoiding the Freccend InterCity also saves the hassle of trying to save money by booking in advance to obtain the cheapest fares for these trains.
Buy at the station on the day you want to travel and a one way ticket for Regionale Veloce/Regionale trains will cost less than €4.
Though be aware that if you book a ticket for the Regionale Veloce/Regionale train it won't be valid on the Intercity or Frecce train.

There are also express Frecce and InterCity trains from Bologna to Modena.
ShowMeTheJourney doesn't recommend taking those trains if you will be commencing your journey in Bologna; they're more expensive and the extra cost is difficult to justify for such a short journey.
Although if you will be heading to Modena from destinations further south and taking a Frecce train to Bologna, then taking one of those express services on to Modena can be a good option.
