Emergency closure of one of Germany's main rail routes

A freight train collision west of Wolfsburg has closed the railway line used by trains travelling between Berlin and multiple other cities including Hannover, Kassel and Koln.

The railway to the west of Wolfsburg has been closed until December 16th due to the damage caused by a collision between two freight trains.
As a result many the routes of the express IC and ICE trains which typically used the high-speed route between Berlin and Wolfsburg, have had to be temporarily revised.

The key alterations are:

  • The ICE trains on the Koln - Wuppertal - Hamm - Hannover - Wolfsburg - Berlin route and the Dusseldorf - Essen = Dortmund - Hamm - Hannover - Wolfsburg - Berlin route are being diverted on to a much longer route for the part of the journey between Hannover and Berlin.
As a result these trains will be departing from Berlin around two hours earlier and arriving in Berlin around two hours later, plus these trains won't be calling in Wolfsburg.
  • The trains which normally take a Amsterdam - Osnabruck - Hannover - Wolfsburg - Berlin route are being turned around in Hannover
  • The ICE trains which normally take the Basel - Karlsruhe - Frankfurt (Main) Fulda - Kassel - Gottingen - Braunschweig- Berlin route are being diverted between Frankfurt and Berlin, so won't be calling at Kassel, Gottingen and Braunschweig.
  • The IC trains which normally take a Leipzig - Magdeburg - Hannover - Bremen - Emden route are cancelled between Leipzig and Hannover.
