How to take the train journey from Milano to Tirano

Tirano is where an easy transfer is available to the trains of the Rhaetian Railway, which take the most spectacular of all Swiss railway journeys through the Bernina Pass.

If you have time available, a day trip from Milan to St Moritz via Tirano is a must!
And the route to Tirano along the eastern shore of Lake Como is one of Italy's most spectacular railway journeys.

There are easy connections available at Tirano into the trains operated by Rhb to St Moritz.
The RhB station in Tirano is a couple of steps away from the Trenitalia station.

All trains also call at: Colico and Lecco and Varenna Cruises across Lake Como depart from Varenna.

This line will be closed between June 11th to Sept 10th between Sondrino and Tirano with buses replacing the trains.

This train service is operated by Trenord and not Trenitalia, but InterRail and Eurail Passes CAN be used on Trenord's trains.

Trenitalia Guide

Trenitlalia is the national rail operator in Italy and in addition to its cheaper types of ticket; it also typically offers other discounts available to non-Italians, which include:

  • Group Offers, provides for a discount of up to 50% when 3-5 Adults travel together.
  • Family Offer for when groups of 2 - 5 people are travelling together and at least one of the party is a aged 11 and under.
  • The Children Free Offer is available for journeys by Frecce trains, when groups of 2 - 5 people are travelling together and at least one of the party is a aged 15 and under.
    Those aged 15 and under travel for free, but the Adults will need to purchase full price 'Base' tickets.

Good to Know

If you have an InterRail or Eurail Pass valid in both Switzerland and Italy you can make further easy connections in Pontresina, Samedan and Chur* in order to make an epic day trip by train from Milano to Zurich.
You can be in Zurich in time to race back to Milan on an EC train.

The images of the red train crossing the viaducts, that are splashed across the Eurail and InterRail marketing, are taken on the route between Tirano and Chur.

*If you make a further connection in Buchs you can also travel this way with a rail pass from Milano to Innsbruck and Salzburg.

Sit on the left of the train (when facing the direction of travel) for views over Lake Como, all of the images were taken from the left of the train.
The railway line travels by the shore of the lake for more than 30 minutes between Lecco and Colico.

Then after Colico the foothills of The Alps can also be seen on the left
