If you have an InterRail or Eurail Pass valid in both Switzerland and Italy you can make further easy connections in Pontresina, Samedan and Chur* in order to make an epic day trip by train from Milano to Zurich.
You can be in Zurich in time to race back to Milan on an EC train.
The images of the red train crossing the viaducts, that are splashed across the Eurail and InterRail marketing, are taken on the route between Tirano and Chur.
*If you make a further connection in Buchs you can also travel this way with a rail pass from Milano to Innsbruck and Salzburg.
Sit on the left of the train (when facing the direction of travel) for views over Lake Como, all of the images were taken from the left of the train.
The railway line travels by the shore of the lake for more than 30 minutes between Lecco and Colico.
Then after Colico the foothills of The Alps can also be seen on the left
