Final Destination: Aix-en-Provence or Gap or Briancon
Despite there being more than 20 x trains per day from Marseille to Aix-en-Provence Centre station avoid turning up at Marseille St Charles station in the expectation of hopping on a train.
This is France and the timetable is irregular, so there can be gaps of more than an hour between departures
For example on Mon-Fri there are no trains between around 09:20 and 11:20.
The four or five trains per day on to Gap and Briancon are faster by around 10 minutes as they are non-stop.
So it's worth looking up the departure times on SNCF Connect even if you will be booking tickets at the station.
1 - 3 x trains per hour
Book early and save: No
Tickets will cost the same price if purchased at the station immediately before departure.

Avoid taking a train to Aix-en-Provence TGV station unless you will be met by someone with transport, as this station is more than 10 km from the town centre.
Even if the connections are good (and they're generally not), the combination of TGV train + bus connection to the town center will be slower than taking one of these direct TER trains.
