Altona used to be a separate town from Hamburg and it the area still feels somewhat distinct from the rest of the city, so the main city centre station Hamburg Hbf is more conveniently located for all of the city's tourist destinations.
Though Hamburg-Altona is a short distance from the city's main cruise liner terminal.
And if you will heading to/from locations in the Hamburg's north-western suburbs connecting into the S-Bahn (local) trains at Hamburg-Altona gives a quicker end-to-end journey compared to making the transfer at Hamburg Hbf.
However, because the main railway route from Hamburg to the north initially heads west and passes by Altona, some of the trains to destinations to the north of the city, including a few of the IC trains to Westerland only use Hamburg-Altona and don't serve Hamburg Hbf.
Though connections in and out of these trains is straightforward, because most of the ICE trains to/from the city, commence and finish their journeys at Hamburg-Altona.
It is a terminus station, so it provides a convenient location in which to turn these trains around so that they can then head off on their long-distance journeys to other cities in Germany.
