Inside Vienna West station Looking across main hall at the street level, the departure concourse is at the upper level to the right

Prior to the opening of Wien Hbf, this superbly elegant station was one of two main rail stations in the Austrian capital.

Now it's primary function is being the terminal in the city for the trains operated by Westbahn, which travel between Wien / Vienna and destinations to the west, including Innsbruck, Munchen, Salzburg and Zell-am-See.

Thanks to its elegant design Wien Wesstbahnhof is very user friendly - the access to to and from the trains is at an upper level, but there are multiple sets of escalators on the station concourse, and lifts / elevators are also available.

Public transport connections:

To line U3 at Wien West The access with the escalators to and from line 3 can be easily found on the street level concourse

Wien Westbahnhof lives up to its name with a location on the western edge of central Vienna, but it has multiple public transport links, which are more easily located than those at Wien Hbf.

line U3

If the start or end point of your journey is located by a station served by line U3 of the Vienna Metro, the taking trains to and from Wien West is likely to make for an easier end-to-end journey than taking trains from and to Wien HBF - when both routes are an option.

In particular line U3 stops at Volkstheater station which is within a 5 min walk of the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Mumok (Museum of Modern Art) and the Leopold Museum.

Line 3 also stops at Stubentor station which is close by the MAK Museum of Applied Arts.

line U6

At Wien West, the access to the line U6 is by using its glass roofed building which is immediately in front of the main rail station.

by tram

Multiple tram routes use the stops in front of the station, but they don't connect Wien Westbahnhof to the heart of the city, as the routes which use them head west and south.
Though line / route 18 is the only direct public transport link between Wien Westbahnhof and Wien Hbf.

Route / line 60 has a stop named Schloß Schönbrunn which is within a 5 to 10 min walk of the Schoenbrunn Palace.
