The trains which are now used on the Copenhagen to Hamburg route

DSB Talgo 230 (Denmark / Germany)

These brand new trains are now operating all services on the Hamburg <> Copenhagen / Kobenhavn route.
They have transformed the service on the route by providing more seats per departure and modern facilities such as reliable wi-fi and on-board info screens.

They also don't have stairs by the doors for entering and exiting the coaches, as they are 'level-boarding' trains.
However, a step up when boarding and a step down when alighting is still required at every station except Hamburg Hbf and Padborg.
At Hamburg Hbf the doors are level with the platform, but at Padborg a set of steps on the platform has to be used.

Good to know info

ShowMeTheJourney has anticipated what questions are most often asked about travelling on these Tago 230 trains managed by the Danish national rail operator, DSB.

If you can't find the information you are seeking, you can ask a question and the AI enabled service will try to write an answer, telling you what you wish to know.

ShowMeTheJourney is yet to travel by these trains, hence the image at the top of the page has been taken from the Talgo website, as the company has manufactured these trains.

How fast does the train travel?

The locomotives assigned to these trains have a maximum speed of 200 km/h (125 mph).

Are seats allocated when booking tickets?

When booking tickets reservations are now only automatically included in these two scenarios:

  • for journeys from 1 June to 1 September;
  • when booking Flexpreis Plus tickets for 1st and 2nd class travel - these are the most expensive types of ticket sold by DB.

When booking any other type of ticket between September 2nd and May 31st, reservations can be added for an additional fee - €5.50 in 2nd class and €6.90 in 1st class.

Note that adding a reservation to the booking guarantees a seated place(s) on the train, but it isn't possible to choose a type of seat, such as at a table, by a window etc.

Can specific seats be selected from a seating plan?

No, this isn't possible.

Do Eurail / InterRail users need to make reservations?

They are mandatory from 1 June to 1 September for international journeys, but they are optional on all other journeys by these trains.

What catering is available on the train?

Travellers in 1st class receive a complimentary welcome pack containing a bottle of water and a sandwich, plus unlimited help yourself coffee and tea is also available.

There are also vending machines available to all passengers, hot and cold drinks plus snacks will be available.

Is Wi-Fi available?

Yes, it is.

Are power sockets available?

Yes and the sockets are compatible with standard EU plugs; Every 1st class seat has socket, but there is one socket per pair of seats in 2nd class.

Is a Quiet Coach available?

Seemingly not

What is the luggage policy?

DSB operates these trains and it's luggage policy does not place a limit on the number of items per traveller, but it stipulates the maximum size of an item as as 100x60x30 cm.

Are wheelchair spaces available?

Yes.

Can non-folding bicycles be taken on board?

Yes, these trains have been fitted with bike racks, but tickets are required.

If you purchase a ticket on the DB website, you can add a bike when booking

Can dogs be taken on board?

Small dogs which can be placed in pet-carriers can be taken on board any train as hand luggage and there is no charge for doing so.

Dogs which can't be fitted in carrier/container, because they are larger than a typical domestic cat, require tickets,
So when booking online for a journey by ICE or IC trains with DB, the German national rail operator, add a larger dog as 'a passenger'.
The price charged will be 50% of the adult rate
If you want to travel 1st class you will need a 1st class ticket for the dog.

On board these trains

The most notable feature of these trains is that there are no steps inside the doors and most of the seats throughout the trains are on the same level as the doors.
So most of the seats have step-free access.
However there are raised seating areas in the Second Class coaches at both ends of the train.

The Second Class coaches at the ends of the train also house the storage areas for bicycles and strollers etc

The First Class coaches are in the middle of the train's formation
Note that if you book 1st class tickets your seats will be some distance from the areas on the train in which larger items can be placed such as non-folding bicycles and prams.

The seat numbers are on electronic panels on the sides of the seats facing the aisle.
