The UK government has launched the Great British Rail sale which has made available over one million Advance tickets at hugely reduced prices thanks to discounts of up to 50% on the usual cheapest Advance fares.
The offers include:

  • York to Leeds for £2.80
  • London to Edinburgh with LNER from £22
  • London to Cardiff with GWR from £25.

The tickets have been placed on sale for journeys from April 25th to May 27th, but they will be taken off sale at midnight on May 2nd.
No registration etc is required, the booking experience is the same as how Advance tickets are usually sold.
Bookings are also open to visitors to the UK.

The tickets can be obtained by either:
(1) Accessing the the Great British Rail sale website, then when looking up a journey the top ticket link will take you to the website of the operator of the route, but all of the other outlets which also sell the route will be listed below.
(2) Going direct to the operator of the route, or an independent ticket agent.

Most of the companies which are participating, which is in effect all operators of train services within England, have published their own Rail Sale guides, which are accessible by clicking the names of the companies on the list below.
Note that certain companies have availability restrictions, which have been made clear on their respective websites; so these key exclusions have been included below:

  • Avanti West Coast Not available 29 April 2022 – 03 May 2022 across all Avanti West Coast Services and 14 May 2022 and 22 May 2022 from London Euston to Liverpool and Manchester only.
  • C2C
  • Chiltern Railways
  • CrossCountry
  • EMR with the following exclusion days; 30 April, 1 May, 2 May across all routes; and on 7 and 8 May on the Intercity and Connect routes.

Also note that when looking up journeys some of the operators aren't making it explicit that you are seeing a Rail Sale price on the search results; even though the price you will seeing for Advance tickets is likely to have been significantly reduced.

Neither ScotRail or Transport For Wales are participating in the Rail Sale, but tickets are available for some journeys between England and both Scotland and Wales.
ScotRail is to operate a separate 50% off promotionfor outward travel on May 9th to May 31st , with bookings available on a dedicated website from May 9th to May 15th.
