Norwegian rail company, Vy now operates the night trains which travel between Stockholm and Narvik in Norway's, Nordland and which travel through Lappland, the most northern province in Sweden.
SMTJ is yet to travel by these trains and specific info about the on-board experience has proved tricky, there are seemingly no pages on the VY or the SJ, the Swedish national rail operator, websites with details on the facilities available in the sleeping cabins etc.
Though Vy has published this useful guide to travelling on these trains, with lots of general info which includes access on how to travel if you require mobility assistance and travelling with a pet.
Four types of accommodation are available on the train
The trains actually only have one type of sleeping cabin, which have 3 beds, Wi-fi and a washing basin - these trains do not convey cabins with showers.
It is how the places in the sleeping cabins are booked which creates the distinction.
Book one or two tickets in one transaction and you could either:
Though take care when travelling in a party of three as you will still be given the private or sharing options (if both types haven't sold out) - if you will be happy to travel together in a cabin, the private cabin can actually be the cheapest option,
When 4 to 6 people are travelling together, you can be given the choice of 'private' or shared sleeping cabins, though if you opt for shared there's no guarantee that you will be travelling together with sole occupancy of two three bed cabins.
Though when 4 to 5 people are travelling together, you will also be given the option of paying extra for a private couchette, so that you won't then have to share it with one or two other people.
The trains convey a restaurant/bistro car, in which evening meals and breakfast, snacks, sandwiches and hot/cold drinks are available.
In effect you could order from the restaurant menu and have your food/drink served to you at a table in the car, or order from the cheaper bistro menu, and take the items away with you to your accommodation.
There is no food/drink service in which items are delivered to the sleeping cabins or couchettes.
Or you can take food and drink on board with you.
In effect [you can bring on board what you can carry](https://www.vy.se/en/customer-service/frequently-asked-questions/frequently-asked-questions-about-trains/on-board#item-54b9a908-4dcf-457f-9948-62a06a7a2cf8, though the recommendation is that if you have bulky luggage, you should book a private compartment.
Skis need to be transported in ski bags and bikes need to be packed into bag with the maximum dimension of 140 x 40 x 95cm.
